UT Bassoonists Recent Successes

Pearson Altizer, UT BM 2014 played a subscription series with the Philadelphia Orchestra as an Artist Diploma student at the Curtis Institute of Music, February, 2015.

Lecolion Washington, who received his BM form UT in1999, is Associate Professor of Bassoon at the University of Memphis. He received a 2014-2015 $25,000 Sphinx MPower Artist Grant and toured the world playing chamber music and teaching master classes.

Michael Severence, UT BM 2012, won the position of Third Bassoon and Contrabassoon in the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, summer 2014. He performed Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra by Rossini with the Shepherd School of Music Chamber Orchestra, April 23, 2015, as winner of the wind concerto competition at Rice University. He was a finalist in the international audition for associate Principal Bassoon of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, spring 2015.

Laura McIntyre, current DMA student in bassoon won the Mid-Texas Symphony Concerto Competition and performed Concerto in F for Bassoon and Orchestra with that professional ensemble on February 8, 2015. She is also a member of Quintexas, the winner of the Wind Division of the International Coleman Chamber Music Competition in California, April 2015.

Midori Samson, current MM student, won the McGraw Hill Outreach prize in New York City for her arts projects connecting to populations in in Kenya, New Orleans and the Philippines, October 2014. During the summer of 2015, she spent 4 weeks volunteering in Bangalore, where she volunteered teaching music and the arts in a school for economically disadvantaged children. She also started a 2 week arts camp in Austin through Artists Striving to End Poverty and offered life-changing experiences to the children involved.

Miles Maner, UT class of 2007 received tenure in the Chicago Symphony as Bassoonist and Contrabassoonist!

T.K. Dewitt, UT class of 2008 won the audition for the Kansas City Symphony as Associate Principal Bassoonist and Contrabassoonist – a full-time job!

Rebekah Heller, UT MM 2004 released her first solo bassoon album, 100 Names, to critical acclaim!

Amanda Swain (UT BM 2009), Just received tenure as Principal Bassoonist of the Houston Grand Opera, and Second bassoonist of the Houston Ballet Orchestra!
