Recent Bassoon Alumni Accomplishments

Jonathan Castillo, MM 2017, won the second Bassoon position in the Shreveport Symphony, and the full-time position as Music Minister at University Baptist Church (Austin, TX).

Kathryn Clark, UT BM 2013, won a position in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa / U.S. 6th Fleet Band and touring quintet, fall 2017.

Rian Craypo, UR BM 2004 (Principal Bassoon of the Houston Symphony) published through Lulu, The Banana of Life: Peeling Away the Mysteries of Reed Making for the Bassoon, 2017.

Adam Drake, UT MM 2017, won the Second Bassoon position with the Lubbock symphony, fall 2017.

Nicole Haywood, UT BM 2014, won the national audition for Assistant Principal and Second Bassoon of the Grant Park Orchestra in Chicago) a world class summer orchestra) and was appointed Acting Second Bassoonist with the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra a full-time, world class ensemble.

Rebekah Heller, UT MM 2004, was appointed Executive Director of the International Contemporary Ensemble, replacing founding director, Claire Chase, in addition to her duties the ICE bassoonist, 2018.

Nathan Koch, UT MM 2009, UT DMA 2011, received tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor at Sam Houston State University, spring 2018.

Miles Maner, UT BM 2007, member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, returned to the Butler School to give a master class, spring 2018.

Midori Samson, MM 2016, substituted in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on several occasions, curated an extended residency in Haiti for her non-profit, Trade Winds, in addition to many other world-changing musical service activities, and membership in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, 2017-18.

Shih-Min Tang, UT DMA 2016, won a one-year position with the Richardson Symphony, and was the second prize recipient in the 2017 “Golden Classical Music Award” International Competition and performed  on the winners’ concert in Carnegie Hall in 2017.

Lecolion Washington, UT BM 1999, was appointed the Executive Director of the Community Music Center of Boston in 2017.

Steve Wilson, UT BM 1996, member of the National Symphony Orchestra, returned to the Butler School to give a master class, spring 2018.
